How Do You Raise Your Alexa Ranking?

Alexa Rankings and how I've Managed to Creep to the Top

alexa How Do You Raise Your Alexa Ranking?
Alexa Rankings

Hi guys, so I got an email from somebody saying, how did you get your Alexa ranking so high.  I really wasn't even paying attention to my Alexa score, as I've been so busy with other things.

The last time I checked my Alexa I was in the millions.  I checked today and I discovered that my Alexa ranking was like 79,424.  Now that's not too bad.

I'm happy with that.  However what I have discovered is my Alexa is going up like 5,000 every week.

So I did a search for Alexa on the internet, and I have discovered people really are struggling with their Alexa score.  Even though I'm not an Alex expert by any means, I thought I would take the time and tell you what it is I have done with my site and maybe you can have the same results.

Here is where my Alexa Ranking Live:

Here is my Alexa Rankings as of June 26, 2011:

Here is what I have not done to increase my Alexa Ranking!

Alright so I decided to search the web and see what other sites were saying to do to increase your ranking.  Now maybe if I had followed these strategies below, I would be ranked even higher.  Again, I still don't feel like I've done all that bad.

  1. There is an Alexa toolbar that is available for download.  You should check your site every day via this toolbar.  (Nope I didn't do that)
  2. Use Alexa redirection to your own site so for instance, http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?chadnicely.com would redirect to www.chadnicely.com (Nope I didn't do that)
  3. Download the Alexa toolbar and use it every day to visit your own website. Alexa even gives you the ability to co-brand the toolbar with your own logo and give it away. You can download the toolbar here: http://pages.alexa.com/prod_serv/associatetoolbar.html (Nope I didn't do that)
  4. Ask your website visitors to leave comments and testimonials on Alexas's page for your website (Nope I didn't do that)
UPDATE: I actually started doing this, and it has helped out drastically.  Look at the screen shot below

Again, you can do these things if you choose to.  It might work out really well for you. However it's nothing I did.  That just seems like a bunch of work to me.  icon wink How Do You Raise Your Alexa Ranking?

Here is What I did, to Increase My Alexa Ranking!

So you guys aren't going to believe this but I did nothing.  No really, I didn't put any effort into it, I didn't monitor it, I didn't even know my Alexa ranking was jumping until I received that email.  Having said that, let me tell you the little bit I am doing, and maybe you can come up with your own game plan.

Consistent Posting - Guys I try to have a post fed every single day.  I don't always succeed but I sure try.  It doesn't mean I have to write a post ever day.  Sometimes I write 3 or 4 posts at once and have them scheduled to post over the following days.  This has made a tremendous impact on my traffic, index rate as well as my Alex ranking.

Optimized Posts - Keyword research is extremely important for ranking and traffic.  Ultimately the more ranking and traffic and visitors, the higher your Alex Ranking.  I make sure the keyword I am optimizing for has all the right criteria to rank well, and then I use SEOPressor to write all of my posts.  That little plug in has saved my butt on more than one occasion.

Click Here to check out SEOPRessor

Create Pages - In addition to posts, I also create pages.  I create a page for an anchor keyword.  Like "Make Money Online".  That is a keyword that is not going away anytime soon.  I use posts to talk about current trends, services, or tools in the market.  Keep your main keywords on pages and not posts.

Length of Pages & Posts - I Honestly think this is a Big one, that has helped with my Alexa Ranking.  IF you notice my posts and pages are very long.  I usually try to be at about 1500 words.  Why?  because the standard that is preached is to have a post that is about 500 words.  Right?  So I am trying to do everything I can to stand out in Google's eyes, and come off as an authority figure.

Quality, Quality, Quality - Guys, do not suckered into all the PLR content, content spinning, or even autoblogging.  Yes even I have reviewed some products in the past dealing with Autoblogging.  I have since removed over 100 posts, because of the new Google Panda Algorithm.  If you want to be an authority figure and have a high ranking Alexa score, then provide good original content.

Support your Content - This goes without saying guys.  Any optimized images that you can add, surveys, user interaction, social networking, embedded videos.  It all helps boost your rankings.

Backlinks - I'm sure you all know from reading my posts, that I take backlinking very extensively.  Well the same goes for building your Alexa ranking.  Backlinking plays a big part in your SEO, Traffic, Viewers, and rankings.  There are tons of posts and pages I have done on backlinking.  You can even check out my marketing strategies to get a good idea what you can do.

Yeah, I know it's like I told you, I'm not having to put any effort into hardly anything.  I'm just doing exactly what Google wants to see, and in return my Alexa rankings are going through the roof.

UPDATE: 09/05/11

I liked everything up until you said your posts are >1,000 words. Man, that’s a lot of work. And at what point is it just repeating yourself?

Chad Nicely August 4, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Hey Ramiro,

How are you friend. You know honestly, its not that bad. I spend more time getting relevant images and the SEO perfect vs meeting my word requirements. It can be done fairly easily without repeating yourself with a little bit of practice. Cheers Friend!

Hi Chad,

Popped over to check out your blog and what do I have here? A nice blog.

About the Alexa ranking, all you’ve done is all I do and I dropped from about 6,000,000 to 3,000,000 in a month. I’m still going up the ladder and my aim before the end of august is to get to almost the 100,000s.

Nice post you have here man.:-)

I agree about the 1500 words part – Google seems to prefer longer and longer articles. This was also something my boss at an seo company suggested and also ran tests for though unfortunately he didn’t tell us about the outcome.
When it comes to Alexa, I’ve heard about some people whose rankings skyrocketed just because they signed up to the (paid) Alexa service. I don’t know if it really had to do with that though, I have yet to sign up to them.

Nice post. Definitely focusing on quality and information relevant to your readership is key. I just saw my Alexa ranking 6 days ago. Yikes. Not good. I changed the focus of my blog while trying to “find myself”. Now I am on track and I dropped over 50,000 in just 6 days of getting focused on the right content. So hope it continues…

Raising your rankings is nice but the only person who could care is someone who might want to advertise on a site. Alexa shows what pages are visited often and what keywords it feels the site is optimized for. Even though Alexa rankings are not that precise as not everyone uses their toolbar.

Other than that why is an Alexa ranking and comments important?

Informative and well written post. I have a website that I have noticed my Alexa Rankings slowly getting better and after doing some online research on how to make it improve even faster, I came across this post. It is nice to see the screen shots and get a sense of how climbing higher in rankings is possible. I also liked your honesty in saying it was not something you initially focused on, but looking back, you were still able to share the things you did to make it rise. Good insights.

Thanks,
David

Long articles are not at all necessary. A good linking strategy is a stronger factor than the content lenght. Short and informative articles are far better than poor content, even though the articles are long.

A higher rank simply means you are getting more traffic to your site, than your competitors. In your customers eyes a higher rank can make the difference between you or your competitor getting the sale. by this we get the less than that so thanks for that.

Hey Chad,
I personally dont take Alexa ranking seriously at all. I mean, its practically useless since its not an accurate estimate of your traffic. Its just an estimate based on visit from people who actually have Alexa toolbar which there aren’t that many people who do.

Non the less, I did an experiment to see if I could lower the Alexa ranking. I simply installed the Alexa widget on my site and in about 1 month the site went from above 50,000 to just under 17,000 and the number is dropping everyday.

I would think that would be a more accurate estimate, since it counts every body who visits your site, since the widget as actually on your site.

Thanks for the tips Chad! Currently, I’m in the way millions, but It didn’t make sense because my traffic was going up.. Greetings Chad – I too write extremely long blogs (about California divorce, family law matters, divorce trance, reactivity, mediation – and how to cope with the legal process) and appreciate your insights about content authoritativeness. I am just beginning to monetize the site by adding Google Adsense. I am not clear how, if at all, Alexa plays into that effort – while I can imagine that Alexa results might reassure advertisers in the Google Affiliate Network, can you tell me whether my Alexa results have any connection with the ads that Google serves up with Adsense, or the value to me per click?
